Health Theme Of The Month
February 2012
Did you know that February is Heart Month? And, did you know that a heart healthy lifestyle can prevent or postpone the onset of cardiovascular disease? The most current statistics from the American Heart Association also report that between 80-85% of all heart disease is preventable!
Building upon that great news, it becomes essential to be asking, “What do I need to be doing to monitor my heart health and to prevent heart disease? The real key is to manage your risk factors and to be pro-active and “Know your Numbers”. Beginning at the age of 20, it’s imperative to get a base-line blood screening to learn your cholesterol values, blood sugar, blood pressure, body weight, waist circumference and also to assess other health habits. These include physical activity (with a goal of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week), plus a tobacco-free lifestyle and a heart healthy diet.

To learn more about heart health and specifically, the effect of your body weight on your heart, you’ll want to attend the free Mini-Educational session featuring Dr. Mark O’Shaughnessy, cardiologist at PPG Cardiology, as he shares: “Heart Health and Weight: What’s the Connection?” on Tuesday, February 7, at the downtown location of the Allen County Public Library at 7 pm in meeting room A. In addition to his sharing, Mike Danley, Snider High School coach and recent Biggest Loser contestant will share “lessons learned with weight loss’.
